Why touch controls make or break a mobile strategy game

I've dropped more strategy games over bad controls than bad design. On a phone, every misplaced tap costs you a wave or a unit, and frustration adds up fast. So before I judge the depth of a game, I judge how it feels to touch.

The best games give you forgiving hit targets and a quick undo. Ironvale Siege nails this by snapping units to sensible positions and letting you reorder without a penalty. When placement feels safe, you experiment more, and experimenting is where strategy games get fun.

Watch out for tiny buttons crammed into corners, and for pinch-zoom that fights you during a fight. A clean camera you trust is worth more than an extra unit type.

My rule of thumb: if I can play a tense wave one-handed on a bus without a misclick, the controls passed. Plenty of otherwise clever games never get there.
