Best strategy games for five-minute sessions

August 16, 2026 · Marek Horvath

I love a deep campaign, but most of my actual play happens in small gaps. Over the years I've learned which strategy and tower defence games respect that, and which quietly expect you to clear a two-hour chunk.

The good ones save mid-wave, resume instantly, and don't tie progress to a timer you can't pause. Spire of Thornwood lets you set a level down and pick it back up exactly where you were, which is why it lives on my home screen.

For the lightest moments, I'll swap to something like Legends of Slots or a quick arcade race, then return to the heavier planning when I have real time. Mixing session lengths keeps everything fresh.

The advice is simple: match the game to the gap. Don't start a forty-minute siege with ten minutes to spare, and don't force a quick casual game to carry a whole evening.
